Zvonar crkve Notre-Dame u Parizu

Victor Hugo

"The Hunchback of Notre-Dame de Paris" by Victor Hugo is a classic of world literature – a romantic historical novel about love, hate and fate in Paris in 1482. With an afterword by Ivo Hergešić.

Victor Hugo wrote the novel in 1831, setting the action in Paris at the end of the Middle Ages (1482). The work is one of the most important novels of French Romanticism and strongly contributed to the renewal of interest in Gothic architecture. The main characters are the bell ringer Quasimodo, the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda, the archdeacon Claude Frollo and the officer Phoebus.

Hugo masterfully depicts the Parisian underworld, beggars, gypsies and the Notre-Dame Cathedral itself, which is actually the central “character” of the novel. Rich in historical descriptions, dramatic plots and strong social criticism, the novel examines the themes of love, rejection, justice and fate.

A classic that marked the 19th century and still captivates new generations of readers. The 1951 edition of Peasant Harmony belongs to the post-war series of quality translations of classic world literature intended for a wide readership. The book contains reproductions of etchings based on drawings by Luc-Olivier Merson by Gery Bichard from the famous French edition from 1889. Today, this edition is a sought-after antiquarian copy among lovers of classical literature.
