The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is an 1876 novel by Mark Twain, set in the fictional town of St. Petersburg on the banks of the Mississippi River and inspired by the author's own upbringing in Missouri. The protagonist, Tom Sawyer, is a mischievous, inventive, and adventurous boy living with his Aunt Polly, his half-brother Sid, and his cousin Mary. He often finds schoolwork and adult rules tedious, constantly devising ways to avoid them. A famous episode—in which he turns the punishment of whitewashing a fence into a desirable activity for other boys—demonstrates his resourcefulness and understanding of human nature.

Tom falls in love with Becky Thatcher and embarks on adventures with his friend Huckleberry Finn that gradually grow more serious. One night in the graveyard, the boys witness the murder of Dr. Robinson. The crime is committed by Injun Joe, who shifts the blame onto the innocent Muff Potter. Although terrified, Tom decides to tell the truth at the trial and save Potter, while Joe manages to escape.

Later, Tom and Huck set out in search of hidden treasure and encounter Joe once again. Meanwhile, during an outing, Tom and Becky get lost in a vast cave, where Tom discovers that the dangerous fugitive is hiding there as well. After a dramatic escape, Tom and Huck find the hidden treasure and become wealthy. Through humor, suspense, and a child's perspective, Twain portrays friendship, first loves, the desire for freedom, and the clash between the world of children and the rules of adults. Tom matures over the course of his adventures: he transforms from a carefree mischief-maker into a boy capable of showing courage, loyalty, and a sense of justice.
