Jedne zimske noći

Jedne zimske noći

Simon Montefiore

Based on a true story and real witnesses to the event, this moving novel of passion, intrigue, and betrayal takes you to 1940s Russia with such thrilling authenticity that you know immediately that you are in the hands of a master storyteller.

Set in post-war Moscow, the novel follows the aftermath of a tragic incident in which two children of the Russian political elite, students of the prestigious School 801, are found dead on the Kremlin Bridge during a celebration of the victory over Hitler. The story focuses on Serafima, a member of the "golden youth", and her friends, fascinated by Pushkin's romanticism and founders of a secret club called "Fatal Romantics". Their seemingly innocent act - a reenactment of a duel from Eugene Onegin in 19th-century costumes - ends in fatal shootings. Suspicion falls on murder, suicide or even a conspiracy against Stalin, which triggers a brutal investigation known as the "Children's Case". Stalin orders the arrest of schoolchildren, forcing them to testify against their friends and parents, exposing forbidden love affairs and family secrets. The novel explores two fatal loves - one between young people and the other between adults - in a world where every mistake is punishable by death.
