Kad sam bio srećan i neupućen
A collection of journalistic pieces and reportage from Márquez's early career. Through witty and incisive writings, he portrays daily life, culture, and the political landscape of Colombia, as well as the foundations of his literary style.
When I Was Happy and Unknown is a collection of early journalistic articles, columns, and reportage written by Gabriel García Márquez in his youth, before he became a world-renowned Nobel laureate. The texts span the period of his work for Colombian newspapers (such as El Espectador and El Heraldo), offering an authentic glimpse into the formation of his distinctive narrative voice and thematic obsessions. In these writings, Márquez addresses a wide range of subjects—from lighthearted vignettes of everyday life, local anecdotes, and cultural events to in-depth socio-political analyses and depictions of poverty in the Colombian provinces. The seeds of magical realism are already clearly discernible in his journalistic work: the author approaches unusual folk beliefs with the same seriousness and attention to detail as actual historical events, blending facts with a rich imagination. The book offers a valuable portrait of a young writer learning his craft through direct observation of the world around him. His style is characterized by an exceptional gift for observation, humor, gentle irony, and deep empathy for the common person. For admirers of his body of work, this collection is key to understanding the real-life events and people that later served as direct inspiration for Macondo and his celebrated novels.
