One of Grey's later, but also most suspenseful novels; full of classic Western motifs: revenge, brotherhood, forbidden love, and the final settling of scores under the Texas sun.
Texas just after the Civil War. Twins Lee and Lane Allen, raised on the Two Sombreros ranch, return home after years in the Confederate army. They are greeted by tragedy on their doorstep: their father has been killed, their cattle stolen, and the ranch is on the verge of collapse. The prime suspect is the powerful neighbor Bodkin, who wants to take over the entire valley.
Lee, calmer and more reasonable, tries to settle the matter through the courts; Lane, a fierce gunslinger, sets out for revenge. The brothers drift apart when Lane kills Bodkin's man in a duel, and Lee falls in love with Bodkin's daughter Kathleen, who is engaged to another man.
The story also centers on a mysterious girl, Surface Jane - an outlaw and gunslinger who helps Lane hunt down their father's killers. The tension builds through chases, nighttime raids, and duels on dusty streets. It turns out that the real mastermind of the crime is Bodkin's brother-in-law, a greedy banker, and Bodkin is just a puppet.
The climax is a big showdown at the "Two Sombreros" ranch: the brothers are reunited, Lane saves Lee and Kathleen, and Bodkin, realizing the truth, dies defending his daughter. Lane goes down in legend as the last great gunslinger, while Lee stays to rebuild the ranch.
