Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Arthur Conan Doyle bio je engleski književnik škotskog podrijetla (Edinburgh, 22. V. 1859 – Crowborough, 7. VII. 1930). Po zanimanju liječnik, tvorac je jednog od najpopularnijih književnih likova, privatnoga detektiva Sherlocka Holmesa. Obogativši detektivsku fabulu strogim logičkim zaključivanjem i pouzdanjem u egzaktne znanosti, te razrađenim odnosom enigmatičnog i ekscentričnog junaka i njegova prijatelja, prostodušna liječnika Watsona, objavio je nekoliko zbirki priča i romana obilježenih ozračjem kasnoga viktorijanskog razdoblja: Grimizna studija (A Study in Scarlet, 1887), Znak četvorice (The Sign of Four, 1890), Pustolovine Sherlocka Holmesa (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, 1892), Uspomene Sherlocka Holmesa (The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, 1894), Baskervilski pas (The Hound of Baskervilles, 1902), Povratak Sherlocka Holmesa (The Return of Sherlock Holmes, 1905). Pisao je i povijesne romane, npr. Bijeli odred (The White Company, 1891), pustolovne priče, ratne izvještaje, putopise, a nakon sinove smrti i studije o spiritizmu.
