Jack London

Jack London (San Francisco, January 12, 1876 – Glen Ellen, California, November 22, 1916) was an American writer, journalist, and adventurer; he was one of the most widely read authors of adventure literature and a prominent figure in American naturalism. His work is characterized by themes of survival, the struggle for existence, social inequality, and the relationship between humanity and nature.
He grew up in poverty and held various jobs from a young age, working in factories, on ships, and as an oyster pirate. He was a sailor, a hobo, and a gold prospector. He gained a pivotal experience during the Klondike Gold Rush in 1897, where he encountered the harsh living conditions of the Far North. These experiences served as the inspiration for his most famous works.
He achieved literary success with the novel The Call of the Wild (1903), the story of a dog named Buck who reverts to his primal instincts amidst the harsh conditions of Alaska. The novel White Fang (1906) explores similar motifs, tracing a wild animal's journey toward domestication and its relationship with humans. Notable works include The Sea-Wolf (1904)—a psychological and philosophical novel exploring the conflict between strength and morality—and Martin Eden (1909), an autobiographically inspired novel about a young writer, his rise in society, and his eventual disillusionment. He also published the novels The Iron Heel, Burning Daylight, and The Valley of the Moon.
In short stories such as "To Build a Fire," London portrays nature's indifference toward humanity and the limits of human endurance. His voyages across the Pacific Ocean inspired his South Sea stories, while his book The People of the Abyss documented the poverty of London's East End.
London was a committed socialist, and his views were influenced by Darwin, Spencer, Nietzsche, and Marx. His works blend adventure, social criticism, and philosophical questions regarding freedom, power, and survival.
