Jadranka - knjiga 1.

Marija Jurić Zagorka

Another of Marija Jurić Zagorka's notable extensive historical romances, ``Jadranka'' is set in the middle of the 19th century, in the era of Bach's absolutism, a political storm that advocated Germanization and centralization in the Habsburg Monarchy.

In Croatia, the German language is introduced in schools and offices, the Croatian language and national symbols are suppressed, the Croatian Parliament is dissolved, and a new means of coercion - the gendarmerie - is introduced as a guarantee of the absolutist efforts of the Court of Vienna. In such an atmosphere, in which it places its heroes, Zagorka once again finds an opportunity to highlight national feelings, but also to express free-spirited views on women's independence and integrity. Beautiful and proud, Jadranka embodies all of that – adopted as an orphan and raised in a Croatian home in Vienna, with no dowry and therefore no prospect of marriage and prosperity, she only trusts in herself and her work. At the same time, she is nationally aware, so she has the hardest time when her patriotism is questioned.

Zagorka once again weaves a complex love story full of twists, political plots and conspiracies, which can be read in one breath. Jadranka'', like many of Zagorka's other novels, was published in sequels, as a newspaper feuilleton, from 1943 until 1945, when the newspaper Nova Hrvatska'' was shut down.

The novel is divided into two parts: The Unknown Miracle of Zagreb'' and The Wise Man Under the Wall''. ``Jadranka'' is the last novel in Marija Jurić Zagorka's vast and not yet fully explored oeuvre.
