Allegri, a distinguished Italian journalist, based his work on thousands of documents, testimonies and archival sources, creating a vivid biography that illuminates the spiritual strength and charisma of this Capuchin monk.
Born in 1887 as Francesco Forgione to a poor family in Pietrelcina, Padre Pio entered the Capuchin novitiate at the age of 16. He became the first priest in the history of the Church to bear the stigmata – the wounds of Christ – for more than 50 years. His life was marked by miraculous phenomena: bilocation, prophecies, healings and conversions. The book describes how he wept with the mourners, laughed with the happy and offered consolation, always looking to the future with optimism, faith and love. He built the “Home for the Alleviation of Suffering”, a modern hospital, demonstrating practical care for the sick.
Allegri emphasizes Pio’s struggle with temptations and the forces of evil, but also his unwavering faith. He died in 1968 and was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002. His incorrupt body in San Giovanni Rotondo attracts pilgrims, where his intercession is felt.
