Ubrzo postaju žrtve prevare i izdaje – Negoro se udružuje s trgovcima robljem. Dick i njegovi prijatelji suočeni su s nizom opasnosti, uključujući okrutne trgovce, opasne životinje i surove prirodne uvjete. Unatoč mladosti i neiskustvu, Dick pokazuje veliku hrabrost, snalažljivost i moralnu čvrstoću. S vremenom uspijeva spasiti sebe i svoje suputnike te razotkriti nepravde trgovine robljem, dok roman nosi snažnu poruku protiv kolonijalizma i rasizma. Verne majstorski spaja napetu radnju s moralnim poukama, prikazujući junaka koji, unatoč godinama, pokazuje zrelost i liderstvo.
