Sa žitom zrijemo

The poetry collection Sa žitom zrijemo ("Ripening with the Grain") by the Catholic priest and poet Antun Jovanovac is a deeply moving, lyrical testament to the inextricable bond between man, the Slavonian land, and faith in God. Published as the culmination of the author's long-standing literary and pastoral work, this collection uniquely unites spiritual verse with sincere inspiration drawn from his native region and the traditional identity of Slavonia. Jovanovac’s verses radiate warmth, humility, and imagery of everyday rural life. The collection’s central motif—grain ripening on the Slavonian plains—serves as a metaphor for human and spiritual maturation. Through the rhythm of the seasons and the toil of working the land, the author recognizes God’s presence and grace, reflecting on fundamental virtues such as patience, gratitude, simplicity, and forgiveness. The poetry in Sa žitom zrijemo is distinguished by its melodiousness, authentic expression, and vivid imagery that easily finds its way to the reader's heart (leading to some verses being set to music). This work stands as an enduring tribute to the poet's homeland, tradition, and the spiritual richness of the Slavonian people, remaining a precious gem of Croatian Christian and patriotic poetry.
