The textbook Arithmetic by Dr. Franjo Hočevar, which served as the basic teaching material for upper secondary school grades in the first half of the 20th century, includes key arithmetic concepts adapted to the educational curriculum of the time.
The work is structured in such a way that it gradually introduces students to more complex mathematical concepts, starting from basic operations with natural numbers, through fractions and decimals, to more advanced topics such as proportionality, percentages, equations and an introduction to algebra.
Special emphasis is placed on the practical application of arithmetic in everyday situations, which is reflected in numerous tasks and examples from trade, measurement and finance. The textbook also contains a collection of practice tasks, which encourages independent learning and the development of mathematical thinking in students.
Translated and adapted into Croatian by prominent mathematicians such as Vladimir Varićak and Stjepan Škarica, the textbook was widely accepted in the school system and had a significant influence on generations of students and teachers. Its methodological clarity and pedagogical approach make it an important part of the history of mathematical education in Croatia.
