U knjizi Drevni tragovi novozelandski autor Michael Baigent (koautor bestselera Sveta krv, sveti Gral) iznosi provokativnu tezu da je službena povijest čovječanstva nepotpuna i da postoji skriveni, daleko stariji sloj civilizacije.

Baigent pregledava globalne mitove (sumerski, egipatski, indijski, majanski, aborigidski) i primjećuje zapanjujuće sličnosti u pričama o „zlatnom dobu“, velikom potopu i „bogovima“ koji su donijeli znanje. Tvrdi da te priče nisu puke legende, već iskrivljena sjećanja na stvarnu naprednu pretpovijesnu kulturu koja je nestala prije 12–15 tisuća godina.

Knjiga donosi primjere „nemogućih“ artefakata i građevina: precizno obrađene kamene blokove u Puma Punku (Bolivija), podvodne strukture kod Yonagunija (Japan), karte Piri Reisa i Oronteusa Finaeusa koje prikazuju Antarktiku bez leda. Autor povezuje to s mogućnošću da je postojala globalna pomorska civilizacija prije zadnjeg ledenog doba.

Iako Baigent ne nudi konačni dokaz, njegov pristup je širok, dokumentiran i izbjegava New Age senzacionalizam. Knjiga poziva na ponovno razmatranje granica ljudske povijesti i ostaje jedan od najutjecajnijih pregleda „zabranjene arheologije“ s kraja 20. stoljeća.
