Collected Poems brings together all of Sanja Pilić's poems, poems that have since gained cult status, poems that are readily quoted, shared, and in which many people readily recognize themselves.
Collected Poems is a complete edition of her poetic work – it brings together four previous collections: Women's Poems (2000), I Knew I Had to Choose a Different Life (2003), Different Loves, Different Poems (2006) and Little Things (2014). The book brings together poems that have gained almost cult status among readers – they are eagerly quoted, shared on social networks and many people recognize themselves in them.
Sanja Pilić's poetry is lively, direct and blunt. It talks about love (small and large), everyday struggles, women's destinies, freedom, loneliness, growing up and existential anxieties – often with a touch of irony, humor and sharp self-irony. The verses are simple, rhythmic, aphoristically charged and easy to remember: “I can endure being alone for centuries”, “Freedom is pleasant. That’s what it’s all about. It needs to be trained”, “Life is a waste if it’s not the best” or “Kindness is punished if you don’t sober up in time”.
Critics point out that this poetry proves the vitality of contemporary Croatian lyric poetry – it is not hermetic, but accessible, comforting and truthful. The book was created at the request of numerous readers because some editions were sold out. It becomes a kind of home of poems to which people return: some seek solace, some the naked truth, and some themselves.
