Ljubomir Maraković

A collection of literary criticism and studies by Ljubomir Maraković. The author analyzes and evaluates contemporary Croatian storytellers and novelists of the interwar period, emphasizing their artistic values from a Catholic and ethical perspective.

Ljubomir Maraković (1887–1959), a prominent Croatian literary, theatre and film critic and one of the leading representatives of the Catholic literary orientation, published in 1929 a collection of essays, studies and short critical miniatures in which he follows and evaluates the new generation of Croatian storytellers and novelists who emerged after World War I. The author focuses particularly on writers such as Ivo Andrić, Dinko Šimunović, August Cesarac, Velimir Deželić Sin, Hamza Huma, Milutin Nehajev and others, analyzing their themes, style and worldview.

Maraković writes from a clear Catholic perspective, seeking a harmony of aesthetic and ethical values in literature. He praises authors who demonstrate moral depth, humanism and a connection with folk life, while criticising naturalism, pessimism or ideological deviations. His approach is balanced, educated and stylistically refined, with an emphasis on the spiritual dimension of literature.

The book is an important document of literary criticism of the interwar period and a testimony to the literary trends of the 1920s. Today it is valued as an overview of Croatian prose of that time from the perspective of the Catholic intelligentsia. It is a rare antiquarian edition that provides a good insight into the literary discussions and value criteria of the time.
