His marriage goes through numerous crises, and love affairs and inner turmoil constantly distract him from a stable life.

Dreiser explores the conflict between artistic freedom and social norms, showing how success, money and recognition do not necessarily bring personal fulfillment. Through Eugene's development, the author examines issues of morality, ambition, love, and human nature, emphasizing how strong an individual's instincts and desires are in relation to society's expectations.
