Kriza / Mi smo za pravicu
Two satirical short stories by Slavko Kolar expose the mentality, political turmoil and struggle of a small village man for his own benefit and justice through humor and irony.
This edition, which includes the short stories "Kriza" (The Crisis) and "Mi smo za pravicu" (We Stand for Justice), showcases the distinctive literary voice of Slavko Kolar. With an exceptional sense of humor and gentle irony, Kolar depicts the dynamics of life in the Croatian countryside during the first half of the 20th century. In his works, he combines keen observation of rural daily life with sharp social critique, exposing human flaws such as greed, calculated self-interest, political naivety, and stubbornness. In "Kriza," the author explores how economic and social upheaval affects the stability of rural households and the relationships among villagers. He illustrates how material hardship leads to absurd situations and reveals the true motives of the local inhabitants. Meanwhile, in "Mi smo za pravicu," Kolar offers a satirical look at rural politics—the pursuit of personal interests under the guise of a quest for justice—and the ease with which ordinary people can be manipulated by cunning agitators. His style is straightforward, infused with authentic rural speech and vivid dialogue. These works not only provide excellent entertainment but also serve as a valuable literary and sociological record, capturing the spirit of an era and the unerring psychology of the "common man" as he grapples with larger social forces.
