Serge Golon

Serge Golon, born Vsevolod Sergeyevich Golubinov (Bukhara, August 23, 1903 – Quebec, Canada, July 12, 1972), was a French writer and explorer of Russian origin, best known for his collaboration with his wife, Anne Golon, on the renowned historical-romance series Angélique. He came from a Russian family and left his homeland following the 1917 revolution. Throughout his life, he held various jobs and traveled extensively across Europe, Asia, and Africa, gaining a wealth of experience that he later drew upon in his literary work.
After the Second World War, he lived in Africa, where he met the French journalist and writer Simone Changeux—later known as Anne Golon. Their marriage evolved into a prolific literary partnership, with Serge contributing significantly through historical research, the gathering of documentation, and the development of the social and political context for the novels.
He gained worldwide recognition as the co-author of the Angélique series, which began with the novel Angélique, marquise des anges (1956). This was followed by Angélique, le chemin de Versailles (1958), Angélique et le Roy (1959), Indomptable Angélique (1960), Angélique se révolte (1961), Angélique et son amour (1961), and Angélique et le Nouveau Monde (1964). The series follows the life of Angélique de Sancé de Monteloup, a woman in 17th-century France who faces court intrigues, political persecution, romantic trials, and a struggle for personal freedom.
Serge Golon contributed to the historical authenticity and adventurous dimension of the novels, particularly through his depictions of political relations, warfare, travel, and the colonial world. The works published under the joint name of Anne and Serge Golon achieved exceptional international success; they were translated into numerous languages and adapted for film.
He passed away in 1972 while in Canada, while Anne continued working on the series. His literary legacy is primarily linked to the popularization of the historical novel and the creation of one of the most famous literary cycles of the 20th century. The collaboration between the Golons remains an example of how to combine historical research, romantic storytelling, and adventure literature.
