20 ljubavnih pjesama i jedna očajna

Pablo Neruda

With this book, Pablo Neruda established a poetics of love, constantly traversing a labyrinth of love built of rapture, suffering, and pain—the mystery of that other shore of love where he anchors his kisses, in the eternal game of loving and being loved.

Pablo Neruda is one of the world's greatest poets of love, a fact best attested to by his collections of love poems and sonnets, as well as the love poetry found in his other works. Neruda assigned poetry the task of bestowing love upon humanity through a magical fireworks display of words—words that encompass everything both within and beyond the human being.

In the twenty love poems of this collection, twilight is frequently chosen as the battlefield where the poet wins over his beloved within the almost mythical realm of an amorous atmosphere—a space defined by dreams of love and happiness. "The Desperate Man's Poem" serves, in a sense, as a distillation of the anguish expressed in the preceding twenty love poems.
