Stalna izložba crkvene umjetnosti Zadar
The monograph by academician Ivo Petricioli is a comprehensive guide through one of the most significant collections of sacral art in Croatia. The book documents in detail the artistic treasures exhibited in the Benedictine Monastery of St. Mary in Zadar.
The exhibition covers the period from the pre-Romanesque to the Baroque and contains works of art of various types, including goldsmithing, textiles, painting and sculpture. Among the exhibits, the most notable are reliquaries from the 7th century, lace and red textiles embroidered with gold threads, the reliquaries of St. Aaron and St. James from the 9th century, and dozens of reliquaries in the shape of hands encrusted with precious stones, the oldest from the 12th century.
In the monograph, Petricioli provides an introductory overview of artistic movements in Zadar from the pre-Romanesque to the Baroque, and then catalogs the works of art according to their types: goldsmithing, textiles, painting and sculpture. The book is richly illustrated, with color photographs that accompany the text and provide a visual insight into the exhibited objects.
This monograph is not only an exhibition catalog, but also a scholarly work that documents and interprets the rich ecclesiastical artistic heritage of Zadar. Petricioli, as the founder of the Zadar school of art history, provides an invaluable contribution to the understanding of the cultural and spiritual history of the city of Zadar and the wider region with this book.
