Friedrich Schiller

A 1782 play by Friedrich Schiller, a key work of the Sturm und Drang movement. The plot revolves around the conflict between two brothers from the Moor family, Karl and Franz, and explores the themes of freedom, morality and social justice.

Karl, the older brother, is a noble idealist, but Franz schemingly denigrates him in front of their father, Count Moor. Deceived, the father disinherits Karl, who runs away disappointed and becomes the leader of a gang of robbers. Karl's gang at first operates according to their own code of justice, but violence and anarchy quickly take their toll, causing Karl's inner crisis. He realizes that his idealism has turned into destructiveness.

Franz, the younger brother, is driven by greed and envy. He manipulates his father, whose death comes as a result of Franz's cruelty. His tyranny at Moor Castle eventually leads to his own downfall, as he fails to achieve either love or inner peace.

The drama culminates with Karl's return home, where he discovers the consequences of Franz's misdeeds. Torn between guilt for his own actions and a desire for redemption, Karl decides to confess his sins to the law, symbolizing Schiller's message of responsibility and human freedom.

"Robbers" is a deeply emotional and morally complex drama, which criticizes social injustices and examines the limits of human ideals.
