Zamke pristojnosti: Eseji o feminizmu i popularnoj kulturi

Maša Grdešić

The Traps of Decency is an inspired blend of erudition and warmth, feminist angst and vulnerability. Reading the book, we feel that we are guided through the challenges of capitalist and patriarchal everyday life by a safe hand, which writes a book that c

As a university professor, literary and cultural theorist Maša Grdešić is used to talking about literature and popular culture academically, from behind the chair. The collection Traps of Decency: Essays on Feminism and Popular Culture is as expected scientifically based, but the voice in it is not at all distant or authoritarian. It is the voice, first of all, of a passionate reader and viewer whose writing begins with the question: how to talk about our loves when our loves are texts, texts created by women, dealing with women and intended for a female audience?

Maša Grdešić writes about these topics meticulously building her argumentation, playfully using a multitude of examples from high and popular culture, and then she speaks without hesitation about what she feels: about the anger when she encounters sexism in her own profession, about the inspiration she finds in younger feminists, about the fire in her brain and stomach when she reads Elena Ferrante and Sally Rooney. If you follow popular culture, think about work, love (or hate) soap operas, shop for sheets at Ikea, feel or have felt teenage angst, and want to better understand all of that—and more—these essays are essential reading.
