Émile Zola

The novel The Poisoner was published in sequels during 1876, and in book form in 1877. It is the story of a woman's struggle for happiness in the working class of Paris.

At the center of the story is Gervaise, who starts her own laundry and has been successful in business for a while. But her husband soon squanders her earnings at the Poison House, a local coffee shop, and the couple gradually sinks into poverty and misery. The Poisoner was a bestseller of the time, infuriating conservative critics and sparking a heated debate about the legitimate framework of modern literature.
