The Aftermath

The Aftermath

Rhidian Brook

"The Aftermath" (2013) by British author Rhidian Brook is set in a devastated Hamburg immediately after World War II.

British Colonel Lewis Morgan is assigned to oversee the rebuilding of the city and takes up residence in a luxurious mansion confiscated from German architect Stefan Lubert. Rather than evict him, Lewis decides to share the house with Lubert and his daughter, creating a tense, emotionally charged atmosphere. The novel explores themes of forgiveness, loss, guilt, and the complex interpersonal relationships between people on both sides of the war. As the relationships between the characters develop, the lines between enemy and ally become blurred.
