Zavjesa: Poirotov posljednji slučaj

Agatha Christie

Agatha Christie's final novel about Hercule Poirot, written during World War II. Set in Styles Court, where Poirot's first novel (The Mysterious Affair at Styles) was also set, it brings the detective's career to a dramatic conclusion.

The plot follows an aging and ailing Poirot, who, accompanied by Captain Hastings, returns to Stiles, now a boarding house. Poirot warns Hastings of a mysterious killer, "X", who manipulates others into committing crimes while remaining invisible. The boarding house is home to a variety of guests: Colonel Luttrell and his domineering wife, scientist Franklin and his young wife Barbara, their assistant Norton, and Elizabeth Cole and Judith, Hastings' daughter. Tensions rise when a series of incidents occur, including the attempted murder of Mrs. Latrell.

Poirot, physically weak but mentally sharp, discovers that "X" is Norton, a seemingly harmless birdwatcher, who subtly manipulates people by appealing to their weaknesses and ulterior motives. Rather than arrest him, Poirot takes the drastic step of killing Norton to prevent further crimes. Afterwards, Poirot, aware of his health condition, stops taking his medication and dies of a heart attack, leaving a letter to Hastings explaining his actions.

The novel explores moral dilemmas, justice and Poirot's sacrifice. Christie wraps up the series masterfully, leaving a tragic but dignified end for her iconic detective.
