Nikad me ne ostavljaj

Kazuo Ishiguro

Never Leave Me (2005) is a dystopian story of love, friendship and moral dilemmas in a world of cloning, a poignant tale of humanity in a world without freedom. Ishiguro's novel leaves a powerful impression, stimulating debates about ethics and the meanin

Set in an alternate version of England at the end of the 20th century, it follows the lives of three protagonists – Kathy, Ruth and Tommy – who grow up at Hailsham boarding school, a seemingly idyllic institution. Through Kathy’s memories, their fate is revealed: they are clones created for organ donation, and their lives are predetermined.

Kathy, now 31, a carer, recalls her childhood and adolescence. At Hailsham, under the supervision of strict but caring teachers, they learn the arts and form close bonds. Kathy and Ruth share a complicated friendship, while Tommy, sensitive and insecure, becomes the object of their attention. Over the years, a love triangle develops between them, marked by jealousy and disagreements. At the same time, they slowly come to terms with their purpose – “donating” organs, which leads to their deaths.

After Hailsham, the trio is confronted with the realities of the outside world. Ruth and Tommy are in a relationship, but Kathy and Tommy share a deeper connection. Through gossip and speculation, they explore the possibility of delaying their donations with love, which leads them to a tragic confrontation with the truth about their purpose and limitations.
