The story begins after the death of wealthy Richard Abernethie, whose inheritance attracts the attention of his relatives.
At the funeral, Richard's sister Cora Gallaccio casually suggests that Richard may have been murdered, causing shock among those present. When Cora is brutally murdered with an axe soon after, suspicions deepen. The family's lawyer Entwhistle, alarmed by the possibility of a crime, hires Poirot to investigate.
