Otkriće sveta u stripu #2: Pustolovina vikinga

Jean Ollivier, Jacques Bastian

The second issue of the series "Discovering the World in Comics" contains two stories: Drakkars in the East (illustration by Eduard Coelho, script by Jean Ollivier) and Kings of the Sea (illustration by Jose Biels, script by Jacques Bastian).

Vikings of the East and Kings of the Sea focus on the Vikings, Norse seafarers who, under the leadership of Leif Erikson, sailed to Vinland (North America) around 1000 AD, almost five centuries before Columbus. The comic depicts their adventures, including the colonization of Iceland and Greenland, sailing the Russian rivers to the Caspian Sea, and attacking Constantinople. It highlights their extraordinary seamanship and bravery, but also the fact that they were unaware of the significance of their discoveries, as they were more interested in loot than in geographical exploration. The Vikings are depicted as romantic heroes, but also as fierce warriors, whose simple adventurous spirit reflects the Norse spirit.

The comic emphasizes historical facts, such as the discovery of Greenland (Erik the Red, 981) and Vinland (1000), with the context of the era (e.g. the coronation of Charlemagne, 800). The antiquarian value of the 1980 edition is enhanced by its rarity and quality.
