The Great Initiates (1889) by Édouard Schuré is an esoteric work that explores the spiritual and philosophical contributions of great spiritual teachers: Rama, Krishna, Hermes, Moses, Orpheus, Pythagoras, Plato, and Jesus.
Schuré, a French writer and theosophist, argues that these initiates shaped the spiritual evolution of humanity, connecting religions and philosophical systems through a common source of universal truth. The book analyzes each initiate in the context of his culture and era, emphasizing their role in transmitting spiritual knowledge.
Rama and Krishna represent Eastern wisdom, Hermes Egyptian mystery, Moses Jewish law, Orpheus Greek art, Pythagoras science and philosophy, Plato idealism, and Jesus Christian love and redemption. Schuré emphasizes that their teachings share a common core – the realization of the immortality of the soul and the unity of the visible and invisible worlds.
The work promotes the reconciliation of science and religion through a synthesis of intellectual intuition and spiritual vision, criticizing dogmatic institutions such as the Church and the university. Despite initial rejection, the book has achieved success, reaching over 90 editions due to its universal message. Schuré calls for the recognition of the spiritual connection of all religions, seeing the initiates as guides to brotherhood and the future of humanity. The style is poetic but controversial due to theosophical ideas.
