The novel is inspired by the life and work of Doctor Felix Kersten, Heinrich Himmler's personal therapist during World War II.

The plot focuses on Kersten's moral dilemma – using his influence with Himmler to alleviate the suffering of prisoners, while simultaneously navigating dangerous political and ethical terrain. Kessel's novel combines historical accuracy with dramatic narrative, exploring themes of humanity, power, and moral compromise in extreme circumstances.
