In the Cordilleras (1894) is an adventure novel, a sequel to On the Rio de la Plata, part of May's South American cycle. The book follows adventures in Argentina during the revolutions, emphasizing themes of justice, forgiveness, and the struggle with the

In the wilderness of the Gran Chaco of Argentina, where the winds carry the whispers of the desert, our travelers, guided by courage and justice, begin a dangerous mission. Pena, a noble soul, seeks salvation for the settler families from the harsh Aripons, while the nameless narrator, skilled in sword and heart, captures Geronimo Sabuco - the wicked bandit Sendador. He secretly frees him from his chains, but betrayal blooms like a poisonous weed: Sabuco, wicked and deceitful, attacks a group of Indians, trapping them in a net of captivity.

The escape becomes a dance with death - they save the Old Desierto from Yern, Sabuco's bloodthirsty son-in-law, and free the captives from the magical Isleta del Circulo on the Laguna de Carapa, where they whisper the secrets of lost souls. The search takes them deep into the Pampa de Salinas, a salty desert where the sun bites like a snake. There, Gomarra, bitter and implacable, throws Sabuco into a deep pit, but the narrator, guided by mercy, extends a hand of salvation.

But fate dances cruelly: Sabuco's son, young and unfortunate, breaks through the ice of the salty desert, losing the sacred quipus - the knotted records of his ancestors. In the agony of his father's remorse, rescued from the depths, Sabuco whispers apologies, but his wounds carry him into the embrace of death, bringing the final balance of justice. In this dance of revenge and forgiveness, the travelers continue, carrying the scar of an adventure through the cordilleras, where hearts bathe in the wilderness and justice blooms from the ashes.
