Prva dama

Susan Elizabeth Phillips

A romantic comedy that follows the 31-year-old widow of an assassinated U.S. president. Phillips masterfully mixes humor, romance, and social commentary on politics and women's emancipation, reminding us that true freedom begins in the heart.

After her husband Matt is assassinated, Nealy, feeling trapped in the White House and the media circus, runs away from the Secret Service. She wants anonymity, freedom, and a normal life—something she never had as the daughter of a senator and First Lady. She crosses the border and ends up in a small town in Indiana, where, disguised, she gets a job at a local diner.

There she meets former senator Matt Yorick, an unsuccessful presidential candidate who is traveling with his troubled fifteen-year-old daughter Lucy and her friend Button. Matt, cynical and charming, runs an impromptu campaign for governor, but family chaos reigns: Lucy runs away from her mother and Button keeps secrets. Nealy, under the assumed name Nell Kelly, becomes their housekeeper and chauffeur, embarking on adventures ranging from campaign repairs to encounters with the media and family crises.

As Nealy and Matt's romance unfolds—full of sparks, arguments, and deep conversations—their vulnerabilities are revealed: Nealy's loneliness behind a facade of perfection, Matt's struggles with failure and fatherhood. Lucy and Button bring humor and warmth as the White House and the nation hunt for the "missing First Lady." The novel culminates in a major revelation, as Nealy faces a choice between duty and heart.
