Attorney Victor Carl seems to have a nose for trouble, and sometimes it comes in the form of a ten thousand dollar check.
And when that check does not oblige him to do anything other than to re-examine the long-closed case of a famous chef and restaurant owner who was convicted of the bloody murder of his young and beautiful wife - who can blame Victor and say that he should have ignored his chronic budget deficit and the upcoming dental expenses, ignored the offer and not accepted the check? But as is usually the case, Victor will soon find himself embroiled in a double conspiracy - on the one hand, the small, almost imperceptible omissions of his previous lawyer will lead him to astonishing discoveries directly relevant to his client's guilt. On the other hand, his new dentist, who knows everything and everyone, has seen fit to fix his life, find new business contacts and the woman of his life. For the most part, everyone thinks they know what's best for Victor and agrees that he should drop the case and leave his client to rot in prison.
