Nema orhideja za gđicu Blandish

Nema orhideja za gđicu Blandish

James Hadley Chase

One of the most brutal and controversial crime novels of its time – accused of pornography and violence, but became a bestseller and a classic of British hard-boiled. Darker and crueler than its American counterparts, full of shock and black humor.

The heiress of a wealthy family, the beautiful Miss Blandish, is kidnapped for a million-dollar ransom. The small gang's plan fails when they are attacked by the more brutal Grisson Gang, led by the sadistic Ma Grisson and her son Slim, a psychopath with a knife instead of feelings.

The Grissons take the girl and the ransom. Slim falls obsessively in love with Miss Blandish - keeps her drugged, raped and "dressed like a doll". The girl, broken by the trauma, begins to show Stockholm syndrome and attachment to her tormentor.

On their heels is private detective Dave Fenner, hired by the father of the kidnapped girl. Fenner is a cynical loner, ready for anything. Along the way, he clashes with corrupt police, bribed journalists and the underworld.

The ending is bloody: Fenner breaks into the Grisson lair, Slim kills his own mother Ma out of jealousy, Miss Blandish shoots Slim in the head and then herself. Fenner remains alive, but without triumph – no victor, no orchids, only death and emptiness.
