“Drama on the Hunt” – a real little crime psychological novella in the form of a “manuscript of a madman”. Editor Kamyshev, a former investigating judge and a passionate hunter, tells how he met the beautiful Olga, the daughter of the forester Urbenin, in the province. Obsessed with her, he forces her to marry the rich but good Urbenin. Olga cheats on him with Count Karneyev and with himself. In a jealous delirium, Kamyshev kills her with a knife in the forest while hunting. The story is told with such cynicism and self-justification that the reader is disgusted by the hypocrisy of the “normal” killer. The work shows Chekhov as a master of dark psychological realism, far from his early humor.
