Liga ribara

Marija Andrijašević

The League of Fishermen brings together everything that makes us read Marija Andrijašević: complex characters, flexible and sumptuous language, convincing dialogues and stories that will hook you with discreet humor.

When Tin Ujević proposed the establishment of the "Self-Help League" for fellow writers, he certainly never dreamed that, almost a hundred years later, he would catch Marija Andrijašević and her heroes and heroines from the collection of ten stories, The Fishermen's League, in the net of words from his essay. Scattered around the Split peninsula and a small island, which could be an imaginary Chakavian archipelago attached to Split, they live lives typical of local fishermen. They have cast hooks, lines and longlines, and they have very good rods, but when they cast the bait they know that not only beautiful things will necessarily be caught on it. Namely, life in its fullness will be caught, because their post is dug into the land, and the catch depends on what swims into the bay with the full moon. These are heroes and heroines who translate Kipling better than Andrić without the ambition to make money from it, girls who take photos to survive teen angst, librarians who write better than writers, singer-songwriters who compose the biggest hits on a lie, lovers who discover themselves in a resort, boys who can still surprise and disappoint us.
