Peter Cheyney

In the novel "The Trap," detective Kalagan is caught in a web of intrigue, lies, and danger. A mysterious case, seductive women, gangster gangs, and unexpected twists lead him through a tense noir world of murder and betrayal.

The plot follows a typical Cheyney hero – private detective Callaghan – who becomes involved in a complex murder or disappearance case. The key is the “trap”: a perfectly set trap involving false leads, double-dealing and morally grey characters. The story takes place in a dark world of nightclubs, wealthy criminals, seductive femme fatales and corrupt police officers. The detective uses charm, cunning and cunning to uncover the truth, encountering dangers, betrayals and unexpected allies.

The style is dynamic, full of fast-paced dialogue, action, irony and cynicism – without deep psychology, with a focus on suspense and twists. Cheyney uses American slang and a noir atmosphere, which was popular in post-war Yugoslavia where his novels were bestsellers of entertainment literature (similar to Spillane or Chandler). The novel belongs to a series with detective Callaghan, and the title “It Couldn't Matter Less” emphasizes the characters' nonchalant, fatalistic approach to danger.
