The title of the novel refers to a verse from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, symbolizing the universal aspiration for brotherhood among people. However, Simmel points out the irony of this ideal in the real world, where people are often far from brotherhood, which further emphasizes the thematic complexity of the work.
