Zakon Vinodolski: Uvod, tekst i tumač

Rudolf Strohal

The antiquarian edition of "Zakon Vinodolski" edited by Rudolf Strohal in 1912, originally published in the "Monthly of the Legal Society", represents one of the most important Croatian philological-legal editions from the beginning of the 20th century.

Rudolf Strohahl's scientific separate brings a scientifically annotated edition of the Vinodol Law, with an introduction on the historical and legal context, as well as critical notes and a transcription of the Glagolitic text. The presentation was conceived as a scientifically based presentation and interpretation of one of the oldest legal monuments of the Croatian Middle Ages. Strohal approached the text of the Law from 1288 with an emphasis on its legal structure, social context and transcriptional tradition, emphasizing the special value of the 16th-century Glagolitic manuscript on which all recent editions are based.

In the introductory part, Strohal considers the place of the Vinodol Law in the development of Croatian communal and customary law and analyzes the political relations between the Vinodol municipalities and the princes of Krk. He devotes great attention to a critical review of earlier editions and interpretations, including the works of Mažuranić and Jagić, and polemically reacts to the remarks of contemporary lawyers and philologists, which makes this edition extremely relevant for the history of scientific study of the monument itself.

The central part of the edition consists of a transliterated Latin transcription of the Glagolitic text and Strohal's detailed analytical notes. The author analyzes legal institutions – from penal provisions and court proceedings to the organization of communal life – showing how the Law represents systematically codified customary law with elements of older Slavic legal traditions. Linguistic notes shed light on the archaic Chakavian basis of the text, while legal-historical commentaries connect the provisions with broader European medieval legal development.

Due to its age, rarity and importance for Croatian legal and linguistic history, Strohal's 1912 edition today has significant antiquarian and documentary value.
