The Maltese Falcon is a crime novel by American writer Dashiell Hammett and one of the most famous works of detective literature.

The main character of the novel is private detective Sam Spade, an intelligent, cold-blooded and resourceful investigator who finds himself in a dangerous web of lies, deceit and murder. The plot begins when a mysterious woman, who introduces herself as Miss Wonderly, comes to the detective agency of Sam Spade and his partner Miles Archer. She asks for help in finding a man who supposedly ran away with her sister. Archer accepts the case, but is murdered the same night. Shortly after, the man they were following is also murdered. Sam Spade begins an investigation and gradually discovers that behind everything lies the search for a valuable statue - the Maltese Falcon. This statue, encrusted with jewels and shrouded in legends, is the object of greed of many dangerous people. The search involves criminals Joel Cairo, Kasper Gutman and Brigid O'Shaughnessy, a mysterious woman who constantly lies and hides the truth. As the investigation progresses, Spade realizes that no one is completely honest and that everyone wants to get to the falcon for wealth. Although he feels attracted to Brigid, he discovers that she is responsible for Archer's murder. He eventually turns her in to the police, putting justice before feelings.
