John Dos Passos

The first part of the epic trilogy U.S.A. John Dos Passos. A mosaic of the fate of ordinary Americans in the period from 1900 to the First World War – ambition, struggle for survival, social unrest and the birth of modern America.

42. parallel (1930) is the first novel of the great trilogy U.S.A. by John Dos Passos, one of the most important American novels of the 20th century. The work is an ambitious fresco of the United States of America in the first decades of the 20th century.

Dos Passos masterfully intertwines the fates of several characters from different social strata - from poor workers, trade unionists and journalists, through ambitious businessmen, to women fighting for a place in society. Through their stories, the novel depicts America in a turbulent period: industrialization, mass strikes, the rise of capitalism, emigration, political struggles and the spirit that precedes the First World War.

Dos Passos uses a revolutionary storytelling technique: he combines realistic prose with "newsreels" (montages of newspaper headlines, songs and advertisements), biographical sketches of real people (Henry Ford, Theodore Roosevelt, Emma Goldman, etc.) and an introspective "camera eye". This innovative style creates a dynamic, cinematic feel and gives the novel the breadth and depth of a true national epic.

42. parallel is not only a story about individuals, but also a strong social critique of American capitalism and the "American dream" that remains unattainable for many. The novel is both a document of time and a universal story about youth, ambition, disappointment and the struggle for a better life.
