The Castle of the Soul is the most famous mystical work of Saint Teresa of Avila, in which, through the image of a castle with many chambers, she describes the soul's journey from conversion to complete union with God.
The Castle of the Soul is one of the most important works of Teresa of Avila and a classic of Christian spiritual literature. Written in 1577 at the instigation of her religious superiors, the work systematically depicts the path of human spiritual maturation towards full communion with God.
The central metaphor of the book is the soul as a castle of transparent crystal consisting of seven chambers or “apartments”. Each chamber signifies a certain stage of spiritual life – from initial conversion and struggle with distraction and sins, through ever-deepening prayer, interior purification and growth in virtues, to mystical union with God in the seventh chamber. Teresa does not offer an abstract theological discussion, but speaks from her own mystical experience, using vivid images, comparisons and practical advice for the prayer life.
The work reflects the fundamental characteristics of Carmelite spirituality: the importance of interior prayer, humility, perseverance and complete surrender to God’s grace. Although she describes extraordinary mystical experiences, the author emphasizes that the true indicator of spiritual progress is growth in love for God and neighbor, not external signs or exceptional graces.
The Croatian edition of Kršćanska sadašnjost brings one of the fundamental texts of Western mysticism, which has shaped Christian spirituality for centuries and remains an indispensable work for understanding Teresa's teaching on the inner life.
