Heroj ulice
Prljavo kazalište – Heroj ulice is the third studio album by the Zagreb rock band, released in 1981. It marked a new chapter in the band's career and brought the title hit that became a classic of domestic rock.
Heroj ulice is the third studio album by the Zagreb rock band Prljavo kazalište, released in 1981 by the record company Suzy. The album represents an important turning point in the band's history because after Davorin Bogović left, Jasenko Houra, the author of most of the songs, took over the vocal parts. This gave the group a different sound and a more intimate authorial expression, moving away from raw punk towards melodic rock and new wave.
The album was recorded at Ferger Studio in the Swedish city of Fjugest, with production by Tini Varga. It contains the songs Široke ulice, Djevojke bi, Lupam glavo u radio, Noćas sam iznaj na kišu, Amerika, Sve gradce bitange, Djevojka snova and the title track Hero ulice. Although it did not achieve great commercial success at the time of its release, critics recognized its authenticity and maturity, and the title track eventually became one of the band's trademarks.
Musically, the album combines rock, new wave and elements of American heartland rock, with strong guitar parts, recognizable melodies and lyrics inspired by urban life, growing up and everyday life. The cover, designed by Mirko Ilić with illustrations by Igor Kordej, further contributed to the recognizable identity of the release.
Today, Heroj ulice is considered one of the most important transitional albums by Prljavi kazalište. The original LP from 1981 is valued among vinyl collectors because it represents the beginning of a new creative period for the band and one of the significant achievements of the Croatian and Yugoslav rock scene.
