Tamna magistrala

Tamna magistrala

Zvonko Karanović

A poetry collection by a leading Serbian neo-beat poet. Through a dark, urban, and highway-inspired aesthetic, the verses explore wandering, loneliness, the open road, and the search for meaning on the margins of contemporary society.

Tamna magistrala (2008) is one of the key poetry collections by the renowned Serbian poet and prose writer Zvonko Karanović. In it, the author continues to develop his distinctive poetic style, in which influences from the Beat Generation, rock 'n' roll aesthetics, cinematic imagery, and urban underground culture powerfully intertwine. The collection's central motif is the "highway" (magistrala)—a symbol of ceaseless movement, the open road, and escape, but also of existential wandering. Karanović’s highway is not merely a thoroughfare but a mental and emotional space where his protagonists and observers confront their own shadows, alienation, and transience. The verses are steeped in a nocturnal atmosphere, the scent of gasoline, the rhythm of the streets, and the anxiety of a life on the verge of total unraveling. His language is direct, visually striking, rhythmic, and stripped of superfluous pathos. Through dark and melancholic, yet intensely evocative imagery, Karanović captures the anatomy of the modern city and the state of the human soul in the era of late capitalism. Tamna magistrala offers an uncompromising glimpse into the world of those who reject established rules, presenting a powerful poetic voice that seeks sparks of authentic freedom amidst the darkness of the highway.
