R. L. Stine

Becky’s life turns into a nightmare when Honey—a girl claiming they are old friends—moves in. Honey’s obsession soon escalates into a dangerous game of taking over Becky’s life, friends, and boyfriend.

The Best Friend is a tense psychological horror novel by popular author R. L. Stine, published as part of the Fear Street series. The story follows Becky, an ordinary teenager whose quiet life is completely upended by the arrival of a new girl in town—Honey. Honey appears out of nowhere, convinced that she and Becky were inseparable during childhood. The problem is, Becky has absolutely no memory of ever seeing her before. Despite this, Honey inserts herself into Becky’s life without hesitation, following her every move. Initially overbearingly friendly, Honey soon reveals her true, dark nature: she begins manipulating Becky’s social circle, stealing her boyfriend, and pushing her out of her own life. When Becky tries to set boundaries, Honey’s obsession escalates into dangerous stalking and open threats. Becky’s attempts to prove the truth are met with disbelief by those around her, as Honey plays the part of the perfect, innocent girl to perfection. Through a dynamic of fear and suspense, Stine crafts a story about how the greatest danger can hide behind the mask of friendship, leading the reader toward an unexpected and shocking conclusion.
