Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves is one of the most famous and beloved tales from the renowned collection of Arabian folk stories, One Thousand and One Nights. This timeless classic—published as part of the iconic "Lastavica" children's book series by the Sarajevo-based publisher Veselin Masleša—has been adapted for young readers to provide an exciting and educational reading experience. The story follows Ali Baba, a poor and humble woodcutter, who accidentally witnesses the arrival of a dangerous band of thieves at a hidden cave filled with riches. Upon learning the magic password "Open, Sesame!", Ali Baba enters the cave and takes a portion of the treasure to support his family. However, his greedy brother, Cassim, soon discovers the secret but meets a tragic end due to his own avarice and forgetfulness. When the thieves realize that someone else knows about their hidden treasure, they embark on a vengeful quest against Ali Baba. In the ensuing suspenseful plot, the clever and loyal maidservant Morgiana plays a pivotal role; using her resourcefulness, she outwits the bandit leader and saves the family. This vivid fairy tale abounds with Oriental motifs, dynamic action, and thrilling plot twists. Beyond offering a magical adventure, the story conveys clear moral messages regarding the dangers of greed and the triumph of wisdom, loyalty, and honesty over evil and violence.
