Tajni agent: Jednostavna pripovijest

Tajni agent: Jednostavna pripovijest

Joseph Conrad

In this novel, Joseph Conrad explores the world of political conspiracies, anarchism, and police espionage in early 20th-century London through a dark tale of ideology and betrayal.

The novel The Secret Agent: A Simple Tale by the renowned author Joseph Conrad, published in 1907 (and cited here in a 1980 edition), is a masterpiece of the psychological and political thriller genre. Set in late 19th-century London, the story follows Verloc—an ostensibly ordinary proprietor of a shop selling curios and pornography—who secretly works as an informant for the embassy of a foreign power (identifiable as Tsarist Russia). When his handlers compel him to carry out a terrorist attack—specifically, the bombing of the Greenwich Observatory—in order to force the British government to crack down on anarchist circles, Verloc sets off a chain of events that ultimately destroys his own family. Conrad masterfully exposes the hypocrisy of political extremists, the corruption within police structures, and the cold indifference of the bureaucracy. Through an ironic tone and brilliant characterization—most notably in the tragic fates of Verloc’s wife, Winnie, and her intellectually disabled brother, Stevie—the author raises universal questions regarding morality, fanaticism, and human nature, rendering the work chillingly relevant even today.
