Washington Square

Washington Square

Henry James

Caught between her father’s distrust and a charming suitor’s attentions, wealthy Catherine Sloper must discover whom to trust and claim the right to choose her own future.

In Washington Square, Henry James creates a searching psychological story of love, inheritance and family power. Set in nineteenth-century New York, the novel centres on Catherine Sloper, the shy, sincere daughter of a wealthy physician. Overshadowed by her father’s intelligence and exacting expectations, Catherine struggles to recognise her own worth.

The handsome Morris Townsend offers the promise of a different life. His attentions awaken unfamiliar hopes, but her father believes the penniless young man is interested chiefly in her fortune. Encouraged by her romantically minded aunt, Mrs Penniman, Catherine finds herself torn between the possibility of love and the demand for obedience.

The conflict reaches beyond the question of Morris’s sincerity. James also examines a father’s desire to control his daughter, his emotional coldness and the uneasy boundary between protection and humiliation. Underestimated by those around her, Catherine gradually reveals an unexpected firmness of character.

Restrained narration, irony and finely judged dialogue expose relationships in which money reshapes affection and trust. Suspense arises from concealed intentions, conversations and choices whose consequences cannot easily be undone.

Compact yet emotionally resonant, the novel will appeal to readers drawn to complex family relationships, moral uncertainty and the quiet struggle for independence.
