Wansfell lutalica

Zane Grey

Adam Larey, a young man from California, kills his violent half-brother Guerd in an argument. Horrified by his actions, he flees to the Colorado desert and vows to spend the rest of his life as a recluse - becoming the mysterious Wansfell, "Wanderer of th

Wansfell wanders the relentless landscapes of Death Valley, Mojave, and Arizona for years, facing thirst, heat, storms, and loneliness, seeking redemption through suffering. Fate does not leave him alone, however: he saves the life of the girl Magdalena Virey ("Daughter of Dismukes"), falls in love with her, but rejects happiness because he considers himself a cursed murderer. Along the way, he meets gold diggers, outlaws, Indians, and desert visionaries. Through encounters and inner struggle, he slowly realizes that true redemption does not lie in running away from people, but in facing the past and accepting forgiveness.

After 16 years of wandering, gravely wounded, he returns to civilization. Magdalena was waiting for him; he finally accepts love and forgiveness - both from himself and from others. With this novel (1923), Grey paints the magnificent, cruel beauty of the American Southwest and an epic story of sin, loneliness, and ultimate salvation.
