Posljednji Stipančići: Povijest jedne patricijske obitelji

Vjenceslav Novak

Vjenceslav Novak's classic about the decline of the prominent Senj bourgeois family, the Stipančićs. The first edition from 1899 is considered one of the most significant and sought-after works of 19th-century Croatian literature.

Vjenceslav Novak in his novel The Last Stipančići (1899) masterfully depicts the decline of a once respectable and wealthy bourgeois family from Senj. Through the fates of the members of the Stipančić family, the author paints a broader picture of Croatian society** in the second half of the 19th century – a time when the old patrician classes were slowly disappearing under the pressure of new social and economic relations.

The novel follows the last generations of the family: a father who desperately clings to old values, a mother who suffers in silence, and children who experience moral and material collapse in various ways. Novak describes with great psychological persuasiveness and naturalistic details how the proud family sinks into poverty, debt, and internal disintegration.

The work is considered one of the most successful Croatian realist novels and a true classic of Croatian literature. The first edition from 1899 today has a high antiquarian value and is extremely sought after among collectors.
